About Alliance for Albanians

The Alliance for the Albanians (Aleanca për Shqiptarët) is a centre-right political party founded in 2015 in the Republic of Macedonia and led by Ziadin Sela MP. The party has as its main goal the achievement of the full national equality between Albanians and Macedonians in all fields, from investments, to institutional representation, fair access to state institutions, employment, infrastructure and increase of the level of national awareness.

In 2016, the Alliance for the Albanians ran for the first time in general elections emerging as the third largest force among Albanian political parties with 16.6% of the Albanian vote and three MPs in the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia. The Alliance for the Albanians, in close coordination with international actors in Macedonia, played a major role in reaching the 61 MPs needed to form a new majority and end the two-year long political crisis that followed the wiretapping scandal involving key figures of the decade long VMRO-DPMNE – Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) regime. The Alliance for the Albanians participated in the new government with the Ministry of Health as well as Deputy Ministers for Foreign Affairs, Transport and Communications, and Labour and Social Policy. In the first few months of the new government, the Alliance for the Albanians led by example in implementing a solid reform strategy, putting accountability, transparency and inclusiveness at the centre of government action. Arben Taravari, Minister of Health for the Alliance for the Albanians, was confirmed by a September 2017 poll of the International Republican Institute as the cabinet minister enjoying the biggest political support with 25%, even ahead of the Prime Minister.

The Alliance for the Albanians ran for the first time at the municipal level in Macedonia at the November 2017 local election. The campaign was marked by significant tensions with government partners, SDSM and DUI which had entered into coalitions against the Alliance for the Albanians in all municipalities inhabited by Albanians, as it was becoming increasingly clear that the Alliance for the Albanians had become the only left alternative to fifteen years of DUI ruling that has led the Albanians further toward impoverishment. Despite an extremely aggressive campaign from SDSM and DUI and an election marked by irregularities, the Alliance for the Albanians won the race for Mayors of Gostivar, Bogovinje and Vrapciste, while also winning 23% of the Albanian vote and a significant number of seats in the local assemblies of municipalities inhabited by Albanians.

This campaign and the fact that we were increasingly witnessing the installation of a new form of state capture by SDSM-DUI, including the rehabilitation of corrupt politicians involved in the 2015 wiretapping scandal, led the Alliance for the Albanians to leave the government less than six months after its establishment.

In March 2018, the Alliance for the Albanians held its first congress where it elected its central level structures, adopted its updated Statute and the Political Platform of the Alliance for the Albanians 2018-2022, making it stronger, more confident, and more prepared than ever in achieving its main political goals.

In the early parliamentary election of 15 July 2020, marked by significant irregularities documented also by OSCE ODIHR, the Alliance for the Albanians ran in a coalition with Alternativa under a joint platform “a State for All” (link: https://tasheshtekoha.com/programi/#fb0=1). This platform focuses on six pillars, respectively: equality and the fight against discriminations, the rule of law, human capital, equal economic and territorial development, sustainable development and digitalisation, and a state integrated in the region, Europe and the world. The coalition Alliance for the Albanians – Alternativa won 8,95% of overall votes or 40,76% of votes among Albanian lists. With 12 seats in Parliament, the coalition Alliance for the Albanians – Alternativa is the only opposition force in the current legislature.

Well aware of the many challenges faced by our society in a prolonged socio-economic transition, the Alliance for the Albanians strives for and believes in a multi-ethnic, European, democratic and social governance model that can and should guarantee a better life for all citizens, as a pre-condition for sustainable economic development and political stability.

The fundamental principles of our political platform are the full equality between communities, the rule of law, a social welfare state, merit based and transparent recruitment in the state administration and the prevention of the exile of educated young professionals and the Albanians in general from the country. From this point of view, the Alliance for the Albanians is open to all political and non-political actors interested in working towards the achievement of a full constitutional equality between Albanians and Macedonians, the development of a genuine European democracy as well a secure Euro-Atlantic future of the country. The Alliance for the Albanians firmly rejects the old, bigoted and undemocratic policies that have hindered the positions of Albanians in the Republic of Macedonia and works towards a policy of national unification to overcome political, party, clan, regional or others divisions.

Congresss 2022

The Alliance for Albanians on March 27, 2022 held the Second Congress at which with 651 votes out of a total of 671 delegates present, Mr. Ziadin Sela was elected President for another four-year term.

The delegates of the Congress also approved the Political Platform of the Alliance for Albanians 2020-2024, a political statement, the new composition of the party Assembly as well as statutory changes.

After the election, President Sela thanked the delegates for the trust and invited all party structures to work together to become the first Albanian force in the country and to achieve the goals and vision of the Alliance for Albanians.

Speaking about the platform and the vision of the party, Mr. Ziadin Sela said that the Alliance for Albanians aims at full equality, overthrow of the state, especially of the judicial institutions, fight against crime and corruption, economic development and progress in the integration processes.
